Sam Hyde Harris (British-born American, 1889-1977). "High Country Autumn" Oil on canvas, ca. 1950. Signed Sam Hyde Harris in white on lower left. A lovely landscape painting by notable California artist Sam Hyde Harris. The composition features tranquil autumnal foliage - the tree leaves glimmering with warm red, orange, and yellow hues - with snow-capped mountains in the distance. Set in a lovely frame and signed on the lower left, this is an exemplary work by Harris. Size: 23.75" W x 17.5" H (60.3 cm x 44.4 cm); 29.5" W x 24" H (74.9 cm x 61 cm) including frame
Sam Hyde Harris came to America from Middlesex, England at age 15, and settled with his family in Los Angeles, California. He studied with Stanton McDonald-Wright, Frank Tolles Chamberlain, Laurance Murphy, Will Foster, and Hanson Puthuff. Early in his career, he created art for posters for the Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and Sante Fe railroads - all of which are collector's items today. During the Great Depression, Hyde taught art at venues such as the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. At age 55, he purchased Jack Wilkinson Smith's old studio on Champion Place in Alhambra. Surrounded by eucalyptus and pine trees, the area had an amazing view of the San Gabriel Mountains earning it the nickname Artists' Alley and later on the titles of "Little Bohemia" as well as the "Greenwich Village" and the "Montmartre" of the Southwest. The alley attracted many beloved artists, including Norman Rockwell. In time, the famous desert artist James Swinnerton also introduced Harris to desert landscapes. Harris would go on to receive critical praise, winning many awards.
