Adolph Dehn (American, 1895-1968). "Deep Sea Denizens" watercolor, ca. 1950s. Signed by the artist on the lower right. Adolph Dehn's "Deep Sea Denizens" is an enchanting watercolor depicting tropical fish of all shapes and sizes swimming about in their natural habitat. Interestingly, Dehn did not abandon his figurative style when he painted this piece during the 1950s, despite the fact that it was the heyday of Abstract Expressionism. Dehn refused to create non-objective compositions that he believed were too obtuse for his audience; however, he did imbue watercolors like "Deep Sea Denizens" with an undeniable element of fantasy. Although a certain degree of realism is evident, Dehn's fish forms intriguingly present with dreamlike facial expressions and float about in a whimsical, somewhat Surrealist manner. Size of sight view: 12" L x 27" W (30.5 cm x 68.6 cm) Size of frame: 24.75" L x 39.75" W (62.9 cm x 101 cm)
Adolph Dehn studied art in his native Minnesota as well as the Art Students League in New York. He began his career as an illustrator for magazines. In New York, Dehn met artists George Luks and John Sloan, two important members of The Eight - also known as the Ash Can School artists - and discovered that he shared their passion for depicting realistic rather than idealized urban scenes. Dehn lived in Europe between 1921 and 1929 and created lithographs that satirized the excessive lifestyles of high society types. In addition, he excelled at landscapes. Dehn would become a master printmaker; however, he transitioned to watercolor in the late 1930s and had a very successful career as a painter. Dehn's style has been associated with regionalism, social realism, and Japanese landscape painting; however, he also created wonderful watercolors that ventured into the realm of fantasy like this example.
Another watercolor of fish by Adolph Dehn entitled "Some Fish" (1955) is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA-3268).

Condition
The watercolor painting has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very nice condition. It is signed by the artist on the lower right. The frame shows minor wear with normal scuffs/abrasions commensurate with age. The verso of frame is inscribed "ADOLF DEHN" on one side and "A.D." on the other three sides. The title "DEEP SEA DENIZENS" is handwritten on the cardboard backing on the verso. In addition, "ADOLPH DEHN 1955 443 WEST 21 - NY" is written on the verso though marked over with grey watercolor. A wonderful piece that is wired for suspension and ready to display.
