Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1250 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel, used to contain crushed lime powder, with a spherical body that rests atop a flared foot. The foot features incised geometric motifs with recessed areas embellished with white pigment, and the body features a black, fineline motif of linear, curvilinear, and zoomorphic motifs. The neck of the vessel emulates a stylized human head - with ovoid eyes, prominent nose and chin, thin lips, and perky ears - that wears a massive, flared headdress that doubles as the vessel's spout. Condition
Spout reattached to top of head and repair to large portion of foot, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions and fading to pigment. Nice preservation to incised motifs on foot as well as most facial features on vessel's neck.
