Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. An impressive hand-built whistle vessel comprised of 4 gourd-shaped chambers with a towering, conical spout rising from one. Enveloped in black glaze, the ancient vessel features a wide, ribbon-form handle that bridges the spout to the gourd diagonal from it, upon which sits a petite bird. The fascinating avian creature presents long, slender legs, incised toes, folded wings, a flared tail, a bent neck supporting a round head, target-motif eyes, and an elongated, projecting beak. The tall spout is used as the whistle's mouthpiece, and the whistle produces a high-pitched sound when played. A fabulously attractive example of musical pottery from ancient Peru! Size: 5.25" L x 5.5" W x 7.75" H (13.3 cm x 14 cm x 19.7 cm)
