- Lot Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican / Lambayeque, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A beautiful crown made from a sheet of gold and hammered into repousse motifs of anthropomorphic figures and birds. The band presents repeating motifs of a figures connected by a delicate curving strand that may indicate waves or wind. Facing each head is a bird form with curved beaks touching the person's forehead. Four small piercings on the terminal tips could attach this crown to a cloth lining or headdress. The figures probably represent Naylamp (also Naymlap, Nanlap, or Nylamp), the traditional founder of the Lambayeque dynasty believed to have come from the south by sea to colonize the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers. Size: 20.75" L x 1.5" W (52.7 cm x 3.8 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand; quality of gold: 72.5%
This piece was part of the John and Nora Wise collection, famous collectors of Peruvian artefacts, and sold pieces to private collectors and major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
