Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Sican / Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1000 CE. A bi-chrome terracotta vessel on a corseted foot bearing a register of impressed stepped and triangular motifs. The globular body is embellished with large black spots suggestive of jaguar pelt and stylized jaguars perched upon the shoulder. Awide strap handle arches along the verso with another wild feline crawling on top. The conical spout displays the head of Naylamp (also Nylamp, Nanlap, or Naymlap), the legendary founder of the Lambayeque, and black striated bands adorn the handle as well as the spout. Size: 6.5" L x 6.125" W x 7.5" H (16.5 cm x 15.6 cm x 19 cm)
Naylamp was believed to have come from the south by sea and colonized the region before he allegedly sprouted wings and flew off into the sunset in a dramatic display of his magical powers.
