Shinichi Saito (also Shin Ichi Saito, Japanese, 1922-1994) "Woman in Tsutsuishi" etching and aquatint, 1983. Hand signed in pencil on lower right corner of composition. Hand signed and dated in pencil on lower right margin with red chop. "AP" for Artist's Proof handwritten in pencil on lower left margin. A beautiful composition by Japanese artist Shinichi Saito, who was trained at Tokyo University of the Arts and whose oeuvre demonstrates a reverence for the Taisho and Showa periods. This composition features a woman wearing a red shawl around her shoulders, her body leaning in dramatic fashion, as if being blown by the wind, and her visage presenting a somber expression. The setting is a railroad station; a train is approaching on the tracks beside a body of water at the right. A wonderful composition by Saito that probes the interior world of human nature in this industrial railway setting.
