East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. Wonderful sandstone carving of a Bodhisattva - in Buddhism, enlightened beings who have postponed entering paradise in order to help others attain enlightenment. This truly fine example probably represents Guanyin, the most famous of all Chinese Bodhisattvas. He stands with arms at his sides, wearing a sash across his chest and a cape over his shoulders. His exposed belly ends just below his navel, where he wears flowing pantaloons tied with a sash belt. Around his neck is a strand of beads with a large bull's head pendant. The head was carved separately and has been lost to the ages. Size: 7.5" W x 18.5" H (19 cm x 47 cm); 20" H (50.8 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection, ex Martin Lerner collection, New York, New York.
