Medieval Middle East/Central Asia, Persia (Iran and Turkey), Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A fine mortar and pestle of a hefty form cast from leaded bronze and covered in layers of matte brown and green patina. The cylindrical mortar has a round but stable base, a slightly bulging lower body, and a gently corseted shoulder that flares upwards to form the rim. A central of avian-form bulbs feature two bird heads above incised animals or figures, and below is a repeating program of stylized zoomorphs striding to the right. The shoulder bears a decorative band of Kufic script against a foliate ground with stylized human heads surmounting each character. All detailing on the mortar is inlaid with silver. Accompanying the mortar is a tubular pestle with a compressed spherical pommel and a rounded pounding face, each with engraved Kufic text enveloping the peripheries. Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to mortar and pestle, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations within mortar body, otherwise intact and excellent. Nice preservation of silver inlays across mortar and great patina throughout.
