East Asia, Sino-Tibetan, ca. 19th century CE. A very fine gilt copper statue of Vajrasattva Bodhisattva seated upon a double lotus pedestal and holding traditional attributes, including a vajra in the right hand and a bell in the left hand. The bodhisattva’s facial features are very refined to reflect her compassionate nature. In addition, her features are painted in red (lips and ears), black (coiffure, brows and pupils), and white (sclera) hues. Atop this bodhisattva’s head, we see an ornate tiara with five rising floral spokes representing the five Dyani Buddhas, with the central top-knot (or ushnisha)symbolic of the Buddha’s spiritual wisdom rising behind and further adorned with gilt bronze ornaments. The figure is extensively bedecked with jewels, almost weighed down by elaborate earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and lovely sashes cascade along the form. Size: 5.5" H (14 cm)
The double-lotus flower base, popular in Sino-Tibetan sculpture, is surrounded by two beaded edges, one at the top and one at the bottom to further the symmetry of the double-lotus flower pedestal. Finally, the base is either sealed or resealed. Given the presence of the seal, this statue was likely created for religious practices. When such figures are consecrated, the image is first purified in order to be deemed suitable for the inhabitance of Buddha or another deity, in this case Vajrasattva. Then the statue is invested with the presence and power of that deity. Unless it has been consecrated, a statue is not considered suitable for use in religious practices. Holy articles are traditionally sealed inside.
Note that the vajra and bell held by Vajrasattva are the most important ritual implements of Vajrayana Buddhism. The vajra, a device for meditation and concentration, signifies male compassion, and the bell symbolizes female wisdom. When paired, they constitute the two elements essential to achieving salvation.
