Western Asia, Scythian culture, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE; Pre-Columbian, north/central coast Peru, late Moche to Chimu culture, ca. 850 to 1200 CE. An opulent pair of ornaments formed from sheets of gold. The Moche/Chimu ornament is composed of 71.5% gold (equivalent to 15K+) and exhibits an ovoid form with a beveled edge as well as two pairs of petite perforations for suspension near the tips. A central circular protrusion decorates the center of the plaque and was perhaps meant to represent an abstract 'eye.' The larger Scythian rectangular ornament is made from 88.9% gold (equivalent to 21K+) and features stippled peripheries, a slight bulge on one side of one end, and intricate spirals that flow across the entire composition. Both pieces are covered in fine patina that glints in the light. Size of largest (Scythian): 3" L x 1.3" W (7.6 cm x 3.3 cm); quality of gold: Moche/Chimu is 71.5% (equivalent to 15K+) and Scythian is 88.9% (equivalent to 21K+); total weight: Moche/Chimu is 0.9 grams and Scythian is 2.1 grams.

Condition
Scythian ornament is a fragment of a larger composition. Losses to lower tip of Moche/Chimu ornament near suspension holes and losses to both sides of Scythian ornament. Both pieces have slight bending to overall forms and minor indentations, and Scythian piece has softening to some repousse details. Great patina throughout.
