Scott Leighton (American, 1847-1898), lithograph printed in color, 1885. Signed Scott Leighton in stone on lower right. Printed in oil colors by Currier and Ives, 115 Nassau St, New York. Original accompanied text, "Harry Wilkes by George Wilkes - Dam Molly Walker by Capt. Walker: Record 2:15." Nicholas Winfield Scott Leighton was a highly respected equestrian artist of his time. According to the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame, "In addition to being praised by contemporary critics for his ability to portray a horse with anatomical accuracy, Leighton was considered by many to be the 'Landseer of the United States,' a reference to the noted British landscape and portrait artist Edwin Henry Landseer." That is high praise! Size: 27.125" W x 18.125" H (68.9 cm x 46 cm)
