Creator: Edward Wells (British, 1667-1727). Based on map by Nicholas de Fer (1646-1720). Engraver: Sutton Nicholls (British, 1668-1729). Title: "A new map of the East Indies, taken from Mr. de Fer's map of Asia, shewing their cheif divisions, cities, towns, ports, rivers, mountains & c. Dedicated to His Highness William Duke of Glocester" ca. 1700. A scarce and very attractive copper engraved double page map of Asia that focuses on the East Indies by Edward Wells - based on a map by Nicholas de Fer, and extending from Iran to the Philippines and then south to Timor. The map presents a dedication to His Highness William the Duke of Gloucester in the title surround, political divisions, pictorial relief, a compass rose with explanations, and Prime Meridians of Ferro and London. A rare example, set in an attractive frame under glass. Size of engraving: 13.75" L x 19" W (34.9 cm x 48.3 cm) Size of frame: 15.875" L x 20.75" W (40.3 cm x 52.7 cm)
Interestingly, Edward Wells was teaching geography and mathematics at Oxford when the Duke of Gloucester was attending. This map was included in the second edition of Wells' atlas, "A New Sett of Maps of Antient and Present Geography" (1701) which is indicated by the addition of the number 30 beneath the elaborate title.

Condition
Map has not been examined outside the frame. Appears to show with expected toning and foxing. Chips/abrasions to corners/peripheries of frame, but the frame is otherwise very nice and wired for suspension.
