Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989). Les Diners de Gala, book with lithographs in colors, 1973. Translated into English by Captain J. Peter Moore. Introduction by Pierre Roumeguere. Signed by Pierre Roumeguere on page 12. Felicie Inc. Publishers New York. Legendary Surrealist artist Salvador Dali and his wife Gala (1894-1982) hosted opulent dinner parties to which guests wore outlandish costumes and wild animals roamed free. These parties were certainly the talk of the town! Dali published this cookbook entitled "Les Diners de Gala" in 1973 - the pages of which reveal just how imaginative and creative these dinner parties were. Interestingly, Dali declared that he wanted to be a chef at age six. This cookbook is beautifully bizarre - true to Surrealist taste - with 136 recipes in its 12 chapters and exotic collages and illustrations - Chapter 10 is devoted to aphrodisiacs! Size: 1.45" L x 8.75" W x 12.1" H (3.7 cm x 22.2 cm x 30.7 cm)
Dali's artworks will not disappoint any fan of Surrealism. According to Christopher Jobson's review, "The artworks depict towering mountains of crayfish with unsettling overtones of cannibalism, an unusual meeting of a swan and a toothbrush in a pastry case, and portraits of Dali himself mingling with chefs against decadent place settings. Recipes include such delicacies as 'Thousand Year Old Eggs', 'Veal Cutlets Stuffed With Snails', 'Frog Pasties', and 'Toffee with Pine Cones'." (Colossal, October 3, 2016) Jobson also points out that although many of the recipes require unusual ingredients and techniques, many of the more traditional recipes came from famous Parisian restaurants such as Lasserre, La Tour d'Argent, Maxim's, and Le Train Bleu.
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, Marquis of Dali de Pubol (May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989) was a Spanish surrealist artist of Catalan ethnicity born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. One of the most famous artists that has ever lived, Dali was a prolific creator working in many mediums such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, writing, multi-media, photography, and film making to name a few. He had a famously eccentric personality, and with his exceptional skill as a draftsman and his unusually imaginative view of the world, Dali captured the attention of the public wherever his work was displayed. He created his own personal philosophy which he called paranoid critical - a state in which one could simulate delusion while still maintaining one’s sanity - which influenced the Surrealist movement. Dali’s world of tapping into the unconscious using symbolism filled with themes from religion, death, eroticism, and decay has fascinated even those who were not frequent art lovers. Dali was a great showman and loved being adored by his public. But needless to say, he had the talent to sustain his popularity even after his death.
