Sally Blakemore (American, b. 1947). "Roswell Horse" mixed media sculpture, 2001. A fascinating sculpture entitled "Roswell Horse" by Sally Blakemore, an award-winning children's book designer who specializes in pop-up books. Blakemore created this piece for the "Trail of Painted Ponies" public art project which originated in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2001. "Roswell Horse" features a spaceship hovering above a horse with one alien still occupying the spaceship and two of his mates who have landed upon the equine's back. The horse and aliens are painted with glow-in-the-dark pigments, and the spaceship with its projecting rays are lavishly embellished with gold pigment as well as colorful notes of green, orange, yellow, and white. Finally, the horse stands upon a black base that is decorated with celestial motif stickers - stars, crescent moons, and planets. Please note: While collectible figurines were created after the original prototypes for the "Trail fo Painted Ponies" this piece is Blakemore's ORIGINAL PROTOTYPE. A unique sculpture that glows in the dark and is truly OUT OF THIS WORLD! Size: 9" L x 14" W x 29" H (22.9 cm x 35.6 cm x 73.7 cm)
Sally Blakemore provided the following context for this piece, "The interest in Roswell has always been a tourist attraction and major legend formed from the UFO culture in New Mexico. The PAINTED HORSE foundation supplied the horses, plastic and the other components are discarded pieces of trash, pushpins and sculpy ALIENS. It was a fun project. This was a whimsical piece using the horse (often known to be reported mutilated along with the cow and pulled from the earth into the ship). Glowing in the dark had to be a part of this piece because of Los Alamos and its history of irradiating the earth in our lifetimes."
More about the Trail of Painted Ponies project: "The Trail of Painted Ponies originated in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2001 as a public art project that invited one-hundred and twenty artists to let their imaginations run wild, and creatively transform life-size fiberglass horse sculptures into original works of art. / The dazzling results were displayed around the entire state of New Mexico where they were enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people. The Painted Ponies received rave reviews in the national media and were featured in a documentary film that aired on PBS stations around the country. When sold, they generated close to one million dollars for different arts, cultural, youth, animal, social and environmental organizations. / What distinguished The Trail of Painted Ponies from many other animal-themed public art projects was the quality of the artwork. The horse form was created exclusively for The Trail by a nationally acclaimed sculptor. A curatorial effort was made to attract the very best established as well as emerging artists to the project. And a special outreach was made to include Native American artists." (World Collectors Net - February 23,2023)

Intact and excellent. Beneath the base is an identification label from the "Trail of Painted Ponies" prototype auction - proceeds from that auction were donated to the public art project. Please note: While collectible figurines were created after the original prototypes for the Trail of Painted Ponies public art project, this is not a figurine but rather an original prototype.
