Samuel A. Kilbourne (American, 1836-1881). "Northern Pike Hooked" - an antique chromolithograph from "Game Fishes of the United States" Boston: Armstrong and Co., 1878-1881. Signed "S.A. Kilbourne" in the plate at the lower left. A beautiful chromolithograph of a Pike by Samuel A. Kilbourne from a series of illustrations for his "Game Fishes of the United States" which were finished just before his death in May of 1881. Here we see a Pike engaged in battle with a fisherman's line surrounded by its natural habitat. The fish is meticulously rendered in a realistic manner - with its spotted pattern, countless scales, red fins, wide-open eye, and toothy mouth - as is the landscape - comprised of shimmering waters replete with ripples, bubbles, and reflections, as well as tree-lined hills in the distance with billowing clouds in the blue skies above. Kilbourne had an undeniable way of making the fish as well as its natural surroundings come to life for the viewer. Size of chromolithograph: 14" L x 20.625" W (35.6 cm x 52.4 cm) Size of frame: 23.5" L x 29.875" W (59.7 cm x 75.9 cm)
Kilbourne was born and raised in Bridgetown, Maine. Given that he grew up on a town that was close to the ocean, it should come as no surprise that fishing was Kilbourne's subject of choice. He also studied landscape painting which allowed for paintings of fish set in incredibly detailed settings. "Game Fishes of the United States" was published by Armstrong and Company (1878-81). According to Arader Galleries, "One of the most noted printing companies of the 19th century, Armstrong & Co. specialized in chromolithography, a relatively new method that they worked to perfect, publishing some of the most memorable illustrations of the time. Calling themselves the 'Artistic Lithographers, Fine Arts publishers,' they were commissioned to do many works of note. Their method of making chromo-illustrations after original paintings and drawings was applied with great success to sporting images, as witnessed by the celebrated series of Kilbourne's fish."
