Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A cast leaded bronze figure of the Egyptian dwarf god Bes standing nude save the animal cloak (with tail) over his shoulders, atop a tiered pedestal which was in turn attached to a spool-shaped base. The portly Bes presents with corpulent limbs and torso, and hands to either side of his male genitalia. His countenance exhibits open almond-shaped eyes arched brows, a tongue protruding from his mouth, and a shaggy mustache and beard that is said to resemble a lion's mane. Bes was a fertility symbol, and figures of Bes have been found associated with ritual bathing places in temples, which may have been associated with childbirth, or with ritualized sexual encounters, similar to shrines to the cult of Bacchus (Greek Dionysos). Size: 3.125" H (7.9 cm)

Bess figure is in excellent condition. Minute nicks to tiered pedestal he stands upon. Spool-shaped base was attached to Bess figure later but is still ancient. It shows minute nicks to peripheries. Flat end atop Bes' head has a few casting flaws and minor age wear. The spool-shaped base and the flat upper end have developed a beautiful green patina. The figure presents with a deeper hue.
