Rome, North African, ca. 3rd to 4th centuries CE. A beautiful, elegant example of the pottery of Roman North Africa, one of Rome's wealthiest provinces. The vessel presents a teardrop-shaped body with a series of applied motifs around its body. It stands on a small, round, slightly flared foot, and has a flared rim with a wide lip. A single delicate handle extends from the sloping shoulder to the lower body of one side. This type of pottery is known as African Terra Sigilata, referring to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process. It was mold made and would have been traded throughout the Roman Empire. Size: 3.25" W x 6.05" H (8.3 cm x 15.4 cm)
The applied decorations on the body include garlands, trees with broad leafy tops, and two religious/mythological scenes that are related. One depicts a standing cherubic figure, the god Cupid (Eros), beside a short columnar altar and holding what looks like an oil lamp with a large flame. On the other side is a scene of a man abducting a woman beside a large tree, depicting the tale of Apollo and Daphne. Daphne was a devotee of Diana (Artemis) who enjoyed exploring the forest and shunned male attention, wishing to never be married. Apollo, god of music (amongst other things), mocked Cupid for his archery skills. In revenge, Cupid shot Apollo with a gold arrow, causing him to fall in love with Daphne - and shot Daphne with a lead arrow, causing her to hate Apollo. In order to escape the lustful god's violent advances, Daphne transformed into a laurel tree. This story was popular in Roman myths, and commonly depicted in Roman artwork.
