Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. Carved from a thick limestone slab, a stela featuring a carved, abstract standing figure holding his arms upward in a gesture of prayer, wearing a long garment with a sash draped over his left shoulder, and facing forward with a contemplative countenance, his face presenting closed eyes, a prominent brow ridge, a relatively naturalistic nose, closed lips, and a neatly combed coiffure. There is a carved arch above the figure. Below the figure is a Greek inscription, as this piece was created in the provinces - probably Asia Minor/Turkey - where Greek was still used. The first part of the inscription translates to "Agathos" which in Greek means "good", "noble", etc. The forms of alpha and sigma probably indicate a date. A wonderful votive stele from ancient Rome. Size: 3.375" L x 7.875" W x 12.375" H (8.6 cm x 20 cm x 31.4 cm); 14.125" H (35.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Interestingly, Roman funerary inscriptions demonstrate the human side of the past, as they often contain words of endearment such as "Agathos" (good, noble) on this example; they also are very informative about names, ages, birth dates and death dates of the people they memorialize and/or honor.
