Roman, Eastern Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely set of 10 mold-formed pottery oil lamps used throughout the Eastern Roman Empire. With 8 redware and 2 blackware, all are intricately adorned with geometric and petaloid patterns with round fill holes. Two deep grey-hued lamps present with circular bodies, large fill holes, and short spouts with large holes; one of these is decorated with radiating striations around its fill hole, while the other has a pinched handle and recessed fill hole surrounded by registers of petaloid, target-like, and square motifs. The rest of the lamps are redware with circular bases. Two of these are slipper shaped with protruding fill hole rims, petite spout holes, raised handles, and sloped shoulders decorated with stripes and circular and phytomorphic designs. Another has a long corseted neck, horizontally flared spout, tiny triangular handle, and slanted shoulder embellished with a striped geometric pattern around a heightened fill hole. Size of largest: 4.375" L x 2.75" W x 1.625" H (11.1 cm x 7 cm x 4.1 cm)
Four more display sizable recessed fill holes encircled by embossed tondos and sloped shoulders. Of these, two have lifted tapered handles and one has a pinched spout; the others' spouts are extended out in a tab-like shape. The last lamp bears a long spout, small fill and spout holes, a slanted handle, and raised central tondo connected to a narrow recessed canal extending to the spout and encompassed by petaloid patterns. Terrific examples from ancient Rome!
