Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Skillfully sculpted from a single piece of marble, the head of a male youth with sensitively rendered features including large almond-shaped, lidded eyes beneath thick brows, a naturalistic nose (with loss to tip as shown), slightly parted lips with a philtrum delineated above, and petite veristic ears (with loss to right proper ear as shown) - all beneath a short, curly coiffure which is adorned by a fillet rendered in relief and encircling the back of his head. The classicizing features and treatment of the eyes suggest that the head is from the Julio-Claudian Period, and the verso is fully carved in the round. A wonderful bust of a male youth from ancient Rome! Size: 7.125" L x 5.875" W x 8.25" H (18.1 cm x 14.9 cm x 21 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
