Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A charming example of a cast leaded-bronze war dog figurine sitting on its haunches with its tail perked up along its lower back. The dog leans forward over its forelegs in a protective stance and holds its head aloft while displaying perky ears, a slender snout, and a panting face with a drooping tongue. Incised striations across its back are indicative of fur, and the entire composition is enveloped in layers of dark brown and dark green patina. This type of dog - perhaps a Cane Corso - was regularly utilized by Roman legions by having them charge into battle along the soldiers. They would wear spiked collars and other armor pieces to protect their vulnerable bellies and hind quarters. Size: 2" L x 0.65" W x 1.9" H (5.1 cm x 1.7 cm x 4.8 cm)
