Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A leaded bronze statue of a prancing horse skillfully cast by the lost wax (cire perdue) technique, with the head arching gracefully up. The horse's pose is dynamic, captured by the sculptor in motion as he lifts one leg in a prance; his mane is rigid, as if cut or knotted into a tight crest. Upon his neck are faint lines indicating a harness or reins. This horse may have been cast separately from a rider figure; together they would represent the Thracian horseman (also known as the Thracian Rider or the Thracian Hero), a recurring motif that persists from the Hellenistic into the Roman period. These figures are often depicted on the funerary stelae of lower- and middle-class Roman cavalrymen; they seem to refer to a specific cult of Heroes, which was based in Philippi and whose name is often accompanied by the epithets "soter" (savior) and "answerer of prayers" (epekoos). The surface of this majestic horse is covered with a rich patina of green and russet. Size: 2" L x 0.5" W x 1.75" H (5.1 cm x 1.3 cm x 4.4 cm
