Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of cast leaded-bronze chariot loops with bell-shaped fittings that attached to protruding rods in front of a chariot body. The top of each fitting has an integral semicircular housing with a circular loop fed through the gap that was meant to hold either reins or a rope for the rider to grasp and maintain their balance. The exterior surfaces of the fittings are embellished with slender, wheel-cut striations that create a layered effect, and both fittings and loops are covered in fine patina. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 2.8" W x 2.3" H (7.1 cm x 5.8 cm); 3.7" H (9.4 cm) with loop fully extended.
