Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming 87% gold (equivalent to 20K+) brooch with an ancient carnelian intaglio stone set in an ovoid bezel. The carnelian is engraved with Mercury, the messenger god, as a charioteer in a two wheeled biga pulled by roosters! The pin body is comprised of a thick gold wire twisted into a safety pin shape with a spiral spring end and a looping clasp head that holds the sharp pin in place. The wire body supports the bezel with a rounded lip and a finely corded band and three granulated balls rest at the top and bottom of bezel. The charioteer has petite incised lines near his head, indicating a winged helmet that identifies him as Mercury. The messenger god drove a biga pulled by roosters, a fitting bird that loudly announces the morning. This pin is beautifully fashioned to integrate ancient artistry into a wearable brooch! Size (pin): 1.75" L x 0.5" W (4.4 cm x 1.3 cm); (intaglio): 0.43" L x 0.5" W (1.1 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of gold: 87% (equivalent to 20K+); total weight: 4.6 grams
