Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. Finely cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, a leaded bronze satyr shown dancing or running upon a pair of goat legs with shaggy fur. His bulbous belly protrudes over his petite genitalia as he raises his left arm, bending it at the elbow, and holding a triangular object - perhaps a cornucopia or a wine vessel such as an amphora - in the crook. Alternatively, his right arm hangs to his side. The satyr is nude and looks to his right, his visage presenting with characteristically pointy ears, sunken, annular eyes, thick brows, a stubby nose, a closed mouth, and a scraggly beard, all topped by a petite pair of gently curve horns and a coiffure that falls just past his shoulders. Size: 1.375" W x 2.625" H (3.5 cm x 6.7 cm); 3.375" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.
Satyrs were powerful symbols in ancient Etruria and Rome, associated with the joy of the Bacchanal. The consumption of wine was an important social activity and satyrs were oftentimes added to decorative items to signify the owner's affiliation with the cult of Bacchus. Themes of the god and his followers were particularly popular during the early part of this time period, as control of the Mediterranean was shifting from Greece to Rome.
