Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A petite cameo finely carved from sardonyx, the sculptor taking full advantage of the black and white hues of the stone to present the pearly white profile bust against a jet black ground. The female visage presents with sensitively rendered delicate features including a round eye, an arched brow, an adorable upturned nose, full lips, and elegant contours of her cheeks and long neck; however, it is her beautiful coiffure that in my opinion really steals the show here - with curls covering her head, and a diadem or hairband adorning it with either a flowing veil or straightened tendrils falling along either side of her neck. Size: .375" L x .3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm)
