Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful gold ring boasting a ribbon form band that expands to an ovoid bezel bearing the inscription "VTR FEL" - an abbreviation for the Latin phrase "VTERE FELIX" or "UTERE FELIX" translating to "use happily" or "use with luck." The gorgeous adornment boasts a minimalist form of a slender, multi-faceted band. A pair of decorative spiraling triangles flank the bezel, protruding slightly outward and followed by flourishing, vegetal motifs. The top and bottom of the bezel is additionally adorned with an undulating periphery. Size: 1.1" Diameter (2.8 cm); gold quality: 91.5% (equivalent to over 21 karats); weight: 18.7 grams; US ring size: 9
"VTERE FELIX" rings were quite popular throughout the empire and have been discovered in military contexts - as a way to wish one success in battle - and at burial sites - perhaps to grant one good fortune in the afterlife. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, "In the early days of the Roman republic, the right to wear jewellery was strictly controlled. Citizens were permitted to wear iron rings whilst ambassadors alone could wear gold. These prohibitions were gradually eroded and by the early Imperial period, gold and gemstones were widely worn. Periodic attempts were made to reign in extravagance but the frequency with which these sumptuary laws were restated suggests that they were mostly ignored."
