Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous white agate intaglio of a fallen or wounded warrior mounted in a ring band of over 21 karat gold. The ovoid stone shows the soldier nude save for a helmet as he lies semi-recumbent on the ground, upper body propped up by one arm and knees bent. Two arrows project from his knees as if he has been struck as he holds his bow and quiver on one shoulder and a dagger lays beside him. Alternatively, the thick, cylindrical ring band tapers opposite the intaglio creating an elegant profile. Size of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 5.75; gold quality: 88.5% (21.24 karats); weight: 3.3 grams
