Romano-Egyptian, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare find! A skillfully carved turquoise head of an emperor - possibly Tiberius - set on top of a conical hair or fibula pin comprised of almost 23 karat gold! The portrait head features deep-set eyes, a heavy brow, a naturalistic nose, and a broad mouth, all beneath a wavy coiffure. The bust is set on a gold ovoid base surrounded by a twisted gold wire, atop a conical pin, surmounted by a second twisted gold wire, lined with 3 vertical bands, and ending in a gold nodule. Size: 0.5" L x 0.7" W x 4" H (1.3 cm x 1.8 cm x 10.2 cm); gold quality: 95.4% (22.9 karats); weight: 11.3 grams
For a Roman cameo of mineral turquoise see: Museum of Fine Arts Boston, accession number 99.109.
Provenance: private Thousand Oaks, California, USA collection, acquired June 2, 2005; ex-Windsor Antiques
