Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century BCE. A stunning gold laureate wreath comprised of a band of carefully, partially cut-out and raised gold foil laurel leaves, each one carefully impressed with veining details, and a back band made from gold sheet that is folded over for reinforced strength. The gold foil used to create this wreath is comprised of 83% gold (equivalent to ~20K). While in ancient Greece, these were used to recognize the victors of athletic competitions, in ancient Rome they were created to crown victorious commanders during wartime. Size: 26.5" L x 8" W (67.3 cm x 20.3 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
A laurel wreath like this example was created to symbolize honor and victory. In its natural form, it was a round wreath comprised of connected branches and bay laurel leaves - a broadleaf evergreen that emitted a magical aroma - or in later times, cherry laurel or butcher's broom. It would have been worn either around the head as a wreath or around the neck as a garland. Due to the fragility of gold foil, it is highly unlikely that those made from the precious metal were intended for daily life. Instead, a wreath like this one was most likely dedicated in a sanctuary or placed in a grave as a funerary offering.

Condition
Minor creases to the gold foil band and leaves, but quite remarkable given its age. Two leaves were reattached. Front section with cut leaves is original and wrapped around a modern rubber tube that is transparent and as such does not detract from the aesthetic. The back folded, flat band was added later and fitted into the ends of this tube to complete the form.
