Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful carnelian intaglio hand-carved with the image of a nude warrior, wounded and kneeling behind his shield, set in a gold ring of over 21 karats. Facing left, the figure carries a spear over his shoulder and holds his shield with one hand as several weapons jut out from his back and torso. Size of intaglio: 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 6.5; gold quality: 88.6% (21.3 karats); weight: 4.6 grams
