Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful, wearable ring formed from 91.5% gold (equivalent to 21K+), with a thick shank and expanding terminals that form the shoulder and ovoid face. Inlaid within the face is a hand-carved carnelian stone intaglio of translucent orange hues, presenting a single eagle standing facing right, with its head turned back over its shoulder. Eagles were, of course, a major symbol of Roman military might and were depicted in bronzes, metals, and pottery. Size: 0.875" W x 0.925" H (2.2 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 8.5; gold quality: 91.5% (equivalent to 21K+); weight: 7.5 grams
Provenance: private London, UK collection, acquired in Vienna, Austria, before 2000
