An outstanding example of ancient Roman jewelry, replete with magnificent artistry and technique. Precious metal quality: 91.6% gold (equivalent to 22K) with 8.5% silver. Total weight: 3.4 grams. US ring size: 8.5. Size of jasper intaglio : 3.375" in diameter (8.6 cm). Size of opening: .8" W (2 cm). Size of shank: .125" W (0.3 cm)
Kheiron (also Chiron) was the wisest and the eldest of the Centaurs (also Kentauroi), a Thessalian group of hybrid horse men. He stood apart from his fellow Centaurs as the immortal son to the Titan Kronos and half brother to Zeus. This said, Herakles accidentally wounded Chiron when he was battling other members of the Centaurs tribe. His wound, poisoned with Hydra-venom, was impossible to remedy and Chiron suffered such unbearable pain that he voluntarily relinquished his immortality. Following this unfortunate demise, Zeus placed him among the stars as the constellation Sagittarius or Centaurus.
