Roman, Holy Land, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A gorgeous example of a free-blown glass double unguentarium made from translucent, blue-green glass. The delicate vessel features a pair of tall, cylindrical chambers - fused along their interior seams - that have a rough pontil scar on the base, gently corseted bodies, and thick, flared rims. Surrounding the exterior surfaces is a single trail of similarly hued glass that creates a ribbed presentation, while zigzagging rigaree adorns both rolled rims. Enveloped in brilliant silvery and rainbow-colored iridescence, this is a fabulous glass vessel from ancient Rome! Size: 1.8" W x 4" H (4.6 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Area of loss to trailing and rigaree. Minor nicks to rims and bodies, with light weathering film, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Otherwise, excellent with beautiful silvery and rainbow iridescence throughout.
