Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A rare Roman silver phalera - a sculpted disk worn on the breastplate during parades by Roman soldiers. This example is cast in high-quality silver (82% purity) with very high relief, depicting the epic battle between Herakles (Hercules, Heracles) and the Nemean lion. Our bearded hero stands with his left knee slightly bent, the lion's head caught in a headlock, Herakles' club off to the side, and floral branches filling the field. The Nemean lion was Herakles' first of 10 (some writings suggest 12) labors imposed upon him by King Eurystheus. Because the lion had golden, impenetrable fur, Herakles had to kill it by strangulation. Size: 2.5" W x 2.6" H (6.4 cm x 6.6 cm); silver quality: 74% to 82%; gold quality: 20.7%; weight: 24.3 grams

Loss to attachment loop on left side. Some light weathering to surface, commensurate with age. Otherwise, mostly intact and very nice with good remaining detail and light patina throughout.
