Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine cast-copper disc with wonderful figural details brought forth in repousse. The obverse face of the disc is surrounded by a raised border incised with small notches which imbue it with a corded pattern. Atop the body is a depiction of Mercury (Greek Hermes) standing in portrait, wearing thick ankle bands and a fastened cloak, and holding his signature caduceus in his right hand. Mercury's left hand extends to his side and meets the waist of the eldest daughter of Atlas and his mother, Maia. Maia dons a flowing chiton which is belted across the waist and holds her right hand to Mercury's shoulder. Between the figures is a raised ovoid ring, and two raised stars are displayed above and next to the figures. Smooth layers of brown and green patina enshroud the disc, and traces of brilliant gilding are still visible within some recessed areas. This may have been attached to a chariot or a personal item. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 6.25" W x 6.125" H (15.9 cm x 15.6 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.
