Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A Roman Giallo Antico marble herm head of Bacchus (Greek Dionysos), god of wine, theatre, and rapture, carved from a marble in high relief. As a herm, it was an ornamental piece intended for display in a cabinet or recessed in a niche or wall. The god of wine is depicted in his youth with idealized features - heavy-lidded almond shaped eyes, an aquiline nose, and slightly parted fleshy lips with wonderful remains of red pigment - all upon an elegant oval face framed by a wavy coiffure that is adorned with a garland. Giallo antico, the marble used to create this herm, was so prized by the upper classes of Rome, that it was quarried from a great distance in Chemtou (Tunisia). Size: 5.75" H (14.6 cm); 7.625" H (19.4 cm) on included custom stand.
The cult of Bacchus was hugely popular in ancient Rome, and symbols of the god were commonly used to decorate domestic items - signifying the freedom created by wine, music, and ecstatic dance.
