Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful carnelian intaglio of squircular form with the left-facing portrait of the mythological hero Hercules (Greek Herakles) incised on top. The backswept coiffure and bearded jawline imbue the hero with a masculine, grizzled appearance while the 78.58% gold ring setting around the intaglio gleams with opulent luster. Size (intaglio): 0.39" L x 0.38" W x 0.11" H (1 cm x 1 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.46" L x 0.88" W x 0.90" H (1.2 cm x 2.2 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 78.58% (equivalent to 18K+); weight: 4.8 grams; US ring size: 7.5

Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Carnelian intaglio is ancient; ring setting is modern. Minor abrasions to intaglio and ring setting, otherwise intact and excellent. Great luster throughout.
