Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An exemplary bronze handle boasting an enthralling relief scene of 2 male figures fighting. Nude save for their long capes, their muscular bodies are posed dynamically, showcasing their slender physiques and sculpted abdomens, as the helmeted figure on the left delivers a swift left hook to the face of his kneeling opponent. The figure on the right simultaneously blocks the knee of his adversary, while also taking a right-fisted jab at his torso. The tubular handle arches upward from the rectangular relief, to create an openwork ovoid form. A series of 5 gentle ridges rise above the scene, almost appearing as a grip in which to place one's fingers, while a nail that doubles as the fist of the left fighter extends from the verso, allowing for attachment. Size: 3.9" W x 3.8" H (9.9 cm x 9.7 cm); 5.8" H (14.7 cm) on included custom stand.
