Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely bronze fibula of an elegant, T-shaped form known as a 'crossbow' fibula due to its resemblance to the stringed weapon. The top section and lateral arms are adorned with baluster-style finials that flank notched grooves, and the bowed, beveled midsection traces down to a vertical body adorned with helical and U-shaped decorations. A pin attached to the verso rests within a narrow housing. Fine layers of brown and green patina cover the entire accessory in color. Size: 1.75" W x 2.9" H (4.4 cm x 7.4 cm)
