Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A Roman bronze situla, a deep-handled pail featuring wheel-cut grooves below the rim and an embossed design. The separately cast arched handle, adorned with palmette attachments, reflects the decorative metalwork of the period. The vessel's exterior displays a reddish-brown patina, indicating its age. A situla (plural: situlae) is an ancient vessel, typically made of metal, used primarily for holding liquids. These containers were often found in ritual, domestic, or ceremonial contexts. In ancient Rome, situlae were commonly used for libations or liquid offerings, especially in religious ceremonies.
Situlae have a distinct shape, usually featuring a bucket-like form with a deep, rounded body, often equipped with handles for carrying. Size: 9" W x 9.75" H (22.9 cm x 24.8 cm); with handles erect: 15" H (38.1 cm)
