Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A fine 99.3% gold (equivalent to 24K) ring with a smooth and rounded band adorned by an eye agate intaglio of banded caramel brown and white hues. The band is dense and solid, just under 23 grams total, the thick shoulders taper and narrow at the band's center. The truncated conical agate is etched with a ant into the flat top, the ant was associated with the Roman goddess Ceres; patron of grain, fertility and prosperity. Such a ring as this one, was intended to bring prosperity to the wearer! Condition
Minor chips to bezel around stone. Agate is intact and very good, ant motif is sharp. Some age expected wear to band, but solid and excellent. Ring is wearable!
