Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd century CE. Absolutely breathtaking, this 22K+ gold ring presents an elaborate design, its shank and bezel comprised of scrolled filigree and granulation all tastefully arranged in a symmetrical composition. Five 'beaded' bands grace the underside of the wearer's finger leading to openwork scrollwork flanking the raised bezel which is further decorated with four equidistantly placed sizeable granules linked via granulated bands and holds a large central piece of layered/sandwiched glass created to resemble banded sardonyx with a dark cobalt blue almost black looking base and a top layer of a lighter baby blue color. Gold quality: 94%, equivalent to 22K+. Size: 1.25" W x 1" H (3.2 cm x 2.5 cm); stone measures .5" in diameter (1.3 cm); US ring size: 5; total weight: 15.5 grams.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-American collection, 1980s to 2000s; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s

Condition
Ring shank, bezel, underside of the table, and granules show expected slight indentations commensurate with age; shank has bent a bit as shown and there is a minute loss/crack to one of its granulated bands. Normal age wear to the layered glass which shows some slight pitting and a nice film of silvery iridescence that the glass acquired over time.
