Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. A lovely, rare double portrait cameo set into a wide 89% pure gold (equivalent to 21K+) pendant border with a loop for suspension. The cameo is carved from black and white onyx, with the portraits in high relief white against a black background. The portrait depicts two youthful figures from the chest up who gaze at each other - one with a head of curly hair, the other with straight hair that is pushed back behind one visible ear and ends at the collar. Each has a sensitive, lifelike face, skillfully incised into the stone. Both wear himations to the neck, though the curly-headed one's is pushed to one side, exposing part of one arm. Who are these two? Similar examples suggest that they are mythological figures or members of elite families or imperial dynasties. This would have been a treasured item for a high ranking Roman. Size: 1.1" W x 1.2" H (2.8 cm x 3 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand; gold is 89%, equivalent to 21K+.
