Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fine pair of 21K (88%) gold hoop earrings with 21K gold (88%) and white glass bead danglers. Each earring presents a hoop with a spiraled serpentine motif adorning one end; the hoops are further adorned by a pair of danglers comprised of gold triangular ornaments decorated with a vertical row of granules and white glass bead drops. These danglers are suspended from gold loops adorned with granules at the lower end of the hoops. 14K gold plated sterling silver earwires were added to make these earrings both striking and wearable! Size of one: 0.5" W x 1.25" H (1.3 cm x 3.2 cm); total weight of both: 4.3 grams; precious metal quality: 88% gold, equivalent to 21K gold.
Believe it or not, the Romans invented the hoop earring which developed around 300 BCE. Hoop earrings on occasion were ornamented with finials representing animals, Maenads (the intoxicated women also known as Bacchae), slaves, or the Greek god Eros. These earrings present a coiling snake which symbolized immortality and was a popular Roman motif - and they are further adorned with beautiful gold and glass danglers.
