Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine Hercules' (Greek Herakles / Heracles) club pendant comprised of 20K+ gold sheet (85% gold) adorned with columns of green enamel inlays set in bezels - 4 rows of 5 teardrop shaped inlays alternating with 4 rows of 4 circular inlays. Together they surround the conical body of the pendant; a large chalcedony cameo depicting the head of Eros or young Dionysos of beautiful jade green hues adorns the lower end, and an integral ridged loop above a ridged collar furnishes the opposite end. The divine visage looks out from the base of the club with finely delineated eyes, an arched browline, an aquiline nose, and pursed lips topped by a crown of wavy hair. An exquisite pendant made to honor the hero who battled evil monsters and perhaps protected its wearer with similar valor! Size: 1.625" H (4.1 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand. Glass face is .375" in diameter (1 cm). Weight: 4.4 grams. Gold quality: 85%, equivalent to 20K+.
Accompanied by scientific report from Striptwist, Ltd., London, by Director Dr. Jack Ogden (16 August, 2013; date of examination: 16 July, 2013). The report concludes that "The style, construction and surface of the object is consistent with an ancient origin." It also states that "Most such were originally earring pendants, but the size and sturdiness of this one might suggest its use on a necklace … The use of Eros or Dionysus reflects the love and fertility significance of the club pendant. It is a representation of Herakles’ club – a rather obvious sign of his male power that he surrendered to Queen Omphale (he also exchanged clothes with her)."
