Rod Grier (American, XX-XXI). "Rocky Mountain Jazz" acrylic on canvas, 2003. Signed and dated lower left. A large-scale painting by Rod Grier that appropriately titled "Rocky Mountain Jazz". In this composition, red curtains are drawn to reveal a band of musicians playing their hearts out one evening with a broad silhouette of the Rocky Mountains in the distance beneath a deep blue sky glistening by the light of a crescent moon. Their audience includes a few mask-like visages peering from behind the instruments and an attractive, long-haired woman sitting and holding her knees to her chest. A captivating painting by Rod Grier, an artist who got his first big break from Quentin Tarantino who commissioned works from Grier for the movie "Kill Bill" and also happens to be the brother of actress Pam Grier, an icon of blaxploitation films like "Foxy Brown" who Tarantino has called the film industry's first female action star. Size: 48.25" L x 72" W (122.6 cm x 182.9 cm)
Artist Statement: "Being a fine artist is a lifelong journey. It has its wonderful Ups and Downs. Some of the most famous ... Or legendary artists of the
19th and 20th centuries have created some of their best works at the ages of 60 through 85!
I started my artistic journey in elementary school, winning school art contests and continuing to focus on my art classes through East Denver High School and Colorado State University.
Much to my surprise, I sold my first piece of art to a New York City friend of my mothers and art collector my senior year of high school. After studying art at Colorado State University and in New York City I eventually moved to Los Angeles and sold my art from time to time until I eventually had my first public exhibit. I firmly believe one must not totally depend on the cushion of teaching art to the true 'Hands On' life experience existence of a free lance artist.
I met a wonderful sculptor/painter named Artis Lane and her husband the late Vince Cannon in early 1986. Artis and Vince became my mentors and encouraged me to do my first one-man show at Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood California. That exhibit was a huge success and I was on cloud nine and on my way.
However I was a bit unknowing about how difficult it would be to survive and flourish as a professional free lance artist. I joined an artist group in Encino California called LA Art headed by Mickey Kaplan. Mickey was very helpful and encouraging to my journey going forward.
A big breakthrough came after meeting the famous film director/producer Quentin Tarantino of Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown Django, and numerous other films. In early 2002 Quentin commissioned me to design 8 Military Commemorative plates for his upcoming movie KILL BILL Vol. #1 . Working with Quentin and his art directors for 4 months was an experience I will never forget. The Kill BILL Vol#1 exhibit I had in Denver was also a great success and helped me sell my first painting for $10,000. The publicity I enjoyed nationwide was a great boost to my artistic career and journey. Creating art is a lifelong journey...... so artists, I say to you, have great fun along your artistic highway!"
