Robert Gil de Montes (Mexican, b. 1950). "Waiting" oil painting on tin, ca. 1980s. A fabulous painting by Roberto Gil de Montes that depicts a magical beach scene with a young man smoking a cigarette at the lower right, a palm tree to the left, tranquil turquoise waters ebbing and flowing before the sandy shore, and two red hearts at the upper left and right corners, demonstrating the influences of Mexican Surrealism as well as traditional retablo art. According to the Otis College of Art and Design "Outstanding Alumni" page, "Roberto Gil de Montes ('72, MFA Fine Arts '76), born in Guadalajara, Mexico, came to the United States in 1965. He received his MFA from Otis, and works in painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics. Gil de Montes was included in the prestigious Hispanic Art in the US: Thirty Contemporary Painters and Sculptors which toured the country in the late 1980s. Among the themes in his figurative and landscape works are his origins in Mexico, life in Echo Park, Mexican popular art, and the tradition of retablos and ex-voto painting. Among his public art commissions is a tile fountain at Los Angeles Metro's Gateway Transit Center."

Condition
Painting is in excellent condition. Frame has a few scuffs with minor pigment loss that could easily be touched up, but is otherwise excellent, wired for suspension and ready to display. There is a gallery label from Marilyn Butler Fine Art of Santa Fe, New Mexico on the verso.
