Rene Lalique (French, 1860-1945). "Aras" art glass vase, 1924. Number 919. Signed (acid etched) "R. LALIQUE FRANCE" on underside. A stunning opalescent glass "Aras" vase designed in 1924 by the great Rene Lalique, a French master jeweler who was famous for his luxury glassware of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. Sitting upon an annular foot, the globular vessel boasts swollen walls meticulously decorated with relief decoration of macaws - in French "aras" - perched and flying amongst meandering vines and orb-shaped fruits. Enmeshed in the dense foliage, the birds frolic about, some fanning out their magnificent, plumed wings to soar through the branches while others contemplate snacking on a fruit. Press-molded, the frosted glass boasts a satin-like surface with beautiful varying hues from deep violet and indigo to glowing gold and saffron when hit with certain light, perhaps intended to mimic the vibrant tones naturally found in the plumage of these birds. Size: 10" Diameter x 9" H (25.4 cm x 22.9 cm)
This is an unusual form for Lalique. The most closely shaped object came the following year as the "Papillons Atomizer" for Marcel Franck.
Rene Lalique studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris and worked as a designer for jewelers in the 19th century prior to establishing his own atelier. In 1900, Lalique exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris thus establishing himself as a master jeweler. He went on to concentrate on glassmaking, creating striking bowls as well as perfume bottles and other vessels, embellishing his forms with intricate reliefs. In 1921, Lalique built a glassworks factory at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace.
A red version of "Aras" hammered 22,500 GBP (equivalent to $34,632 at the time) at Christie's London (South Kensington) on May 31, 2012 (Live Auction 6200, "Lalique," lot 97).
